Uniqueness of Cotton Hill Girls School

The school is owned by the Govt. of Kerala has a unique position among public sector schools globally. This is one of the the largest school, which has the highest number of girl students world over.

In Asia, Govt. HSS for Girls, Cotton Hill is the largest Girls school with more than 5,000 girls coming from all walks of life aiming at 100 percent success in every aspects.

It is an embodiment of women empowerment with 160 teaching staff and 12 non teaching staff among which only a few males in this Smart School.

History of Govt. Higher Secondary School for Girls, Cotton Hill

Govt. Higher Secondary School for Girls, Cotton Hill was started in 1859 by the Maharaja Sri Uthram Thirunal. as a free school for girls in Thiruvananthapuram which continued to function in the present day Sanskrit college building at Palayam till the tenure of Sir C.P. Ramaswami Iyyer, the Divan of Travancore.

Later it was splited into three by Sir C.P. Ramaswami Iyyer, one was taken to Paruthikunnu (Cotton hill). Later Cottonhill school became prominent.

There were UP and primary sections, later it was upgraded as HS in 1935 and the LP section got bifurcated. Again the Govt. had decided to de-link the UP and HS on plea of administrative purpose. Due to massive resistance from the public the attempt became fruitless and the status-quo was maintained under the leadership of two HMs.

In 1997 the Kerala Govt. decided to delink pre-degree courses from universities and introduced two years HSS course (Plus two course) in some selected high schools.

The then Chief Minister Sri E.K. Nayanar inaugurated the state level scheme in this school in 1997. Recently Govt. Higher Secondary School for Girls, Cotton Hill was adorned with "school of excellence" aiming of it a roll model that is "cotton hill model" for schools.

Admission in GGHSS, Cotton Hill

Admission in Govt. Girls High School, Cotton Hill is open to public in standards 5-10 without entrance test, screening test and recommendation. Admission starts in 1st week of May 2011. Application for the admission can get from the school by paying a fee of Rs 2/-.

Students will be given specific dates for admission on prior inquiry. Admission to Govt. Girls Higher Secondary School will be only through single window system instituted by the Govt. of Kerala. Application for admission can get from the school on working hours. Filled in applications can be submitted any of the Higher Secondary School, Thiruvananthapuram District.

Rules in GGHSS, Cotton Hill

Students must be in uniform in all working days. Students and teachers must attend school assembly in time, i.e., 9:20 AM. Keep the surroundings neat and clean. Should obey the rules that are passed timely by the authorities. Must be obedient, polite, honest, and sincere.

The former students and teachers of this institution are requested to fill in the given form and register their name with this organization with the total sum of Rs. 200/- including registration fee and membership fee of Rs. 100 each.
