Azhikode St. Thomas Church also known as Mar Thoma Pontifical Shrine is known as the birth place of the Christianity in India. It's a famous Christian shrine situated at Azhikode, a few km away from Kodungallur town. The main significance of this church is that it is one of the seven churches that have been founded by St.Thomas and obviously the first one. The church has been built on the year 1953 and the church today holds the relic of St.Thomas - a bone from his arm.

The relic of St.Thomas was bought from Italy, Orthana and was enshrined on this church on December 6, 1953 under the supervision of late Eugene Cardinal Tisserant. The church became a pilgrim center from that date onwards and it has been receiving large number of devotees daily.

St.Thomas is one of the 12 disciples of Jesus Christ and he landed on India on the shore of Kodungallur on November 21, 52 A.D. He is believed to have landed on the Malabar Coast on one of the Roman vessels. The church shows a small video film to the visitors that show more historical details about St.Thomas and his visit to India. He has also worked from Ethiopia to China to propagate Christianity.

The church is built on the model of St. Peter's Basilica, Rome and the church is situated on the banks of river Periyar.

Visitors can buy books at reasonable prices. Special Prayers done on this church Special mediatory prayer services (Novena) is conducted on request every Sunday and devotees can make use of this special prayer service.

The Main Feast Festival Done on St. Thomas Church, Azhikode

The main feast of the church is celebrated on November 21 every year in Commemoration of the apostles 'Entrance to India' and the celebration lasts for a week.

There is a chapel at the back of the shrine and this was built to commemorate the 19th centenary of the arrival St. Thomas.

There is no season to visit any religious place and this church is like that also. The months of September to May holds an importance to religious ceremonies in this church and that does not mean that you should visit the church only during this time.
